“Everybody leads somebody”

August 8, 2025

Dear City Church,

Everybody leads somebody.

At City Church, we believe that whoever you are, you lead someone. You exert influence over someone. You have the potential to shape others into the likeness of Christ through your words and your actions.

That’s why, for as long as City Church has been around, we’ve prioritized leadership development. We are eager to help men and women grow into confident and gracious leaders in their families, in the church, in their communities, and in our city. One of the primary programmatic ways we carry out leadership development is through a class we call Leadership Basics.

Leadership Basics is an eight-session introduction to Christian leadership built around biblical principles of ministry and focused on practical ways to lead others. Typically offered every other year, Leadership Basics covers topics like relational ministry, ministry by grace, and ministry in community. We also dig more deeply into the core subjects of Reformed theology, recognizing that a proper approach to leadership depends on a foundation of solid biblical theology.

While Leadership Basics is required for the men nominated to serve as elders or deacons at City Church, it is open to anyone at the church. We believe that the content is so valuable and the time together so formative that we encourage as many people as possible to participate. Whether you’re a City Group leader, a music team volunteer, an attendee at a Women’s Bible study, or a member of one of our leadership committees, we’d love to have you join us this fall.

For the Fall of 2025, Leadership Basics will run every other week from August 24th through December 7th. It will meet on Sunday mornings from 9AM to 11AM at 406 W. Franklin Street, just about a mile from Grace Covenant.

Leadership Basics does require some homework (readings from an introductory theology book as well as some supplemental articles every week), but we know that with most things in life, we get more out of experiences when we put more effort in. That means that Leadership Basics is most fruitful when participants commit to regular attendance and active participation in all of the sessions.

Registration for Leadership Basics is now open. We’d love for you to consider committing to it this fall. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me or another member of our staff. We’re asking for registration by Friday, August 22nd, so that we can organize the necessary materials for everyone.
