Hard Words

Jesus shows us that without truth, our relationships lack definition and meaning. If people are on the wrong road, messing up life, they will continue to mess up unless they face the truth. If the only gift we give an abusive husband is compassion, then we are contributing to his evil. If we only try to understand a mean wife without speaking the truth to her, our love for her is incomplete. The gift of compassion must be accompanied by the gift of truth.

Proverbs 3:11-12, 15:30-33

11 My son, do not despise the Lord's discipline
or be weary of his reproof,
12 for the Lord reproves him whom he loves,
as a father the son in whom he delights.

30 The light of the eyes rejoices the heart,
and good news refreshes the bones.
31 The ear that listens to life-giving reproof
    will dwell among the wise.
32 Whoever ignores instruction despises himself,
but he who listens to reproof gains intelligence.
33 The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom,
    and humility comes before honor.
