Meet Our Diaconal Candidate

On Sunday, November 22nd, we will hold a congregational meeting immediately after the service to vote on our candidate for deacon: Justin Barnett.

A deacon is a member of the church called by God and set apart as a servant addressing the physical and tangible needs of the church. Deacons lead the larger Diaconal Ministry Team so that the elders can carry out spiritual teaching and shepherding. Deacons were first chosen in the New Testament church after prayerful discernment (Acts 6:1-7). City Church’s deacons currently are: David Boyce, Barrett Clark, Stephen Day, Jacob Hotinger, Will Jarrett, Carter Neal (chair), and Blake Parrott

We’ve put together Q&A for Justin so you can get to know him better. Between now and our congregational meeting, we encourage you to get in touch with Justin (justin@citychurchrva.com) to learn more.

Reminder: All are welcome to attend the congregational meeting; only communing members may vote.

Let’s meet Justin!

Where were you born and/or raised?
I was born and raised in Fredericksburg, VA.

Where did you go to school?
I attended VCU from 2017 to 2022. I have a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering

How do you spend your days?
I spend my days as a husband to my wife, Kathryn Super, and caring for our two Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers, Ginny and Tony. I work as a Fire Protection Engineer designing sprinkler and fire alarm systems. I am also a Young Life Leader to VCU college students.

When and how did you end up at City Church?
I ended up at City Church in October 2019 (I still have the pamphlet with the old colors). I was looking for a new church, and a lot of the Young Life leaders I led with in college were attending City Church.

How long have you been a member?
Since December 2021.

Why did you decide to pursue the office of deacon?
I had a desire to seriously think about leadership in the church a few months before coincidentally receiving a nomination. That is a major reason why I joined the Emerging Leaders program: to explore this desire. When I received the nomination, I felt very immature and unprepared for such a role. It was a call I didn't think I would get until I was older. Since then, God has shown me a lot of grace through this process, my wife, and friends and family, and I am confident He has called me and prepared me to carry out the functions of this office.

What do you look forward to most about serving in this role?
I look forward to continuing to serve City Church and to help carry out our mission to "worship God, serve Richmond, and work for its renewal."
