But the location and start times still stand! We’ll meet out at Smithfield Farm (1464 Newtown Road, St. Stephens Church, VA 23148) starting at 4pm on the 24th to share a meal, play some games, and enjoy each other’s company. More details here!

HAPPENING AT CITY CHURCH...

Women’s Retreat: Our 2015 Fall Women’s Retreat will take place Saturday, November 7th through Sunday, November 8th at Wintergreen Resort. Courtney Thompson of RUF at UVA will be our speaker. Register for the retreat here. And please do NOT let cost prohibit your from attending; please contact Meg Haden (meg@citychurchrva.com) to discuss financial assistance if needed.

Hope for People-Pleasers: Fearing Less, Loving More: One of the deepest, most common roots of our relational problems is the act of replacing God with people. Whether it is labeled peer pressure, people-pleasing, or need for attention and approval it is seen in how we overachieve, feel easily embarrassed, or get angry when are faults are exposed. This is a universal problem. This course examines those roots and outlines God’s antidote. We’ll meet on six Sundays (beginning September 13th) in room 303 at Grace Covenant from 2:45-3:45pm. Childcare available by request (please RSVP for childcare here). Email joshua@citychurchrva.com for info.

SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES...

Help us serve at John B. Cary Elementary! John B. Cary is a local elementary school eager to have faith communities actively caring for their kids. If you get excited about helping people at City Church serve at this local school by coordinating supply drives, praying for their teachers, or helping volunteers tutor in their lunch buddies program, please contact Barrett Clark or Blake Stack at outreach@citychuchrva.com to learn more about being a Mercy and Justice team liaison for this school.

Serve with CARITAS! CARITAS is right around the corner–October 3rd through 10th. Please consider being a part of this great opportunity as we partner with Grace Covenant to show the compassion of Jesus to the homeless community by volunteering to make meals, shuttle guests to showers, lead Bible studies, play games, and exchange stories. A variety of volunteering options are available on our online sign-up sheet. This is a great activity for City Groups or for individuals. Please contact Caroline Garrett at cgarrett17@gmail.com or 703-201-0508 with questions. Household items are also needed to help make CARITAS a success. Needed items include: towels, washcloths, hand towels, twin sheets, blankets, pillows, pillowcases, toothbrushes, razors, travel sizes of toothpaste, deodorant, shaving cream, shampoo, conditioner and bath gel. The donation box is located in the Narthex (the front area of the church where you enter for services). Please bring donated items by Monday, October 5th!

COMMUNITY EVENTS OF INTEREST…

James Ryan – “Five Miles Away, A World Apart: Five Years Later”James Ryan will revisit his Richmond-based book, Five Miles Away, A World Apart, (which focused on two local high schools, Thomas Jefferson and Freeman) as a means of discussing the current state of education. Ryan—the dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Education–has written extensively about how law structures affect educational opportunity. Admission to the event is free, and a reception will follow the lecture. This community event, not sponsored by City Church, will be held in the University Student Commons Theater (907 Floyd Ave) on October 1st, from 4:30pm to 6pm. To register, please contact Coronda Lee at 804-827-2655 or rsvpsoe@vcu.edu.

Getting Real: Getting Real is a series at local restaurants that features personal stories of tragedy, triumph, and the places in between. Our speaker this October is Shawn Boyer, the Founder & Chairman of Snagajob.com, America’s largest hourly employment network. Launching Snagajob, Shawn felt the weight of the world on his shoulders. “Work Life” and “Faith Life” never intermingled. It wasn’t until 2004 that he caught God’s vision for more. Join us to see how God meets people in their circumstances and how He can reveal His purposes in your own life. Visit needleseye.org to register!
