A Note to the Parents

Dear Parents,

Well, here we are: back-to-school season is upon us.

This time of year brings with it a mixture of emotions—both for us and our kids. It can also bring up issues that drifted into the background during the lazy days of summer and are coming back into focus as the first bell of the year gets ready to ring.

This series of short devotionals (Backpack Devotionals, we’re calling them) were written with three hopes in mind:

  1. To name some of those emotions so they feel a bit more manageable for everyone.

  2. To offer you and your kids a jumping off point to talk about things that might be on their minds (and yours).

  3. To root items 1 and 2 in the fact that Jesus loves your kids and is for them.

Each devotional includes one or two Bible verses relevant to the topic, as well as a sample prayer. Use them as you see fit: read them as a family; pass them along to your independent readers if you’ve got ‘em; or text the link to your older children with an embarrassing gif or emoji—whatever works for you. But please do share them with your kids. That way, should life at school start to feel big and scary, they’ll have a few made-for-them reminders of God’s love to keep in their metaphorical back pockets…or backpacks, in this case.
