Announcements, 3.5.14

This Week's Sermon: This week Clint Dowda, Pastor of Grace Community Presbyterian Church in Mechanicsville, will preach on 1 Thessalonians 5:12-22. We invite you to read ahead to help prepare yourself for this week’s sermon.

Lent Resources: This week we enter a season in the Church calendar called Lent. For people who didn’t grow up going to church or who grew up in churches that didn’t mark Lent, it can be confusing. We’ve pulled together some resources to guide you through your worship in the coming weeks. Please review them and let us know if you have any questions.

RCLI Update: Please take a moment to stop by the City Church website and read this update from Lauren Sharp on the Richmond Christian Leadership Institute, one of our mission partners. (They are now accepting applications for their 2015 class!)

Ash Wednesday Observance: We will hold a service in observance of Ash Wednesday TONIGHT at 7pm at All Saints Presbyterian Church (3000 Grove Avenue). All are welcome!

Prayer Tomorrow: At City Church we strive to be a community of prayer: dependent on God for His purpose, protection, and provision. Please join us tomorrow, March 6th, at 7am to pray for individual needs, City Church, and for the city of Richmond. We’ll be meeting this week at the Church office, 3rd floor at Grace Covenant. Enter in the back entrance of building. Hope to see you there. (City Church prayer takes place every other Thursday.)

Friday Night Dinner: Our next Friday night dinner is on March 14th, and we want you to join us! This is a casual dinner open to all – members, visitors, neighbors, etc. – that will provide a chance for us to get to know new people within our community. Hosts will provide the main dish, and each attendee (up to 12 per house) can bring a side of their choosing to share with the group. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP no later than Tuesday, March 11th to Lara Kling at, and she will be in touch with details.

Create During Lent: City Church member and artist, Kim Nix, is organizing an effort to get people to create something every day during the season of Lent. This discipline for artists (and non-artists) has the potential to draw us into deeper intimacy with God. Towards the end of Lent, on the evening of Saturday, April 5, participants are invited to meet at the Nix's home for a discussion and celebration. If you're planning to participate, please email Kim at; she will compile a list of those taking part and send them emails of encouragement and inspiration in the coming weeks.

Mercy Ministry Conference (One-Day registration is now available): As we continue to learn how to live out Christ’s merciful love to the marginalized in our city, we value opportunities to be with others who can offer training and support. One such opportunity is the 2014 Mercy Ministry Conference in Washington D.C from March 20 to 22. For those interested, a one-day registration is now available for Friday, March 21 (the cost will be $75). For more information, or to RSVP, please email (Financial support is available upon request.)

3rd Annual City Church Banquet: An invitation to the 3rd Annual City Church Banquet was sent out earlier this week, but you can access it here if you have already done so. The banquet will take place in Grace Covenant's Fellowship Hall immediately after the service on Sunday, March 23rd. All are welcome to join us for this semi-formal, catered event when we will share a meal and celebrate all that God has done for and through our church over the last year. Please RSVP through the invitation linked above no later than Monday, March 17th. Contact Val Catrow ( with questions.

Easter Brunch and Egg Hunt: To mark our celebration of the Easter season with our kids and families, we will hold a special event open to all at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, on Saturday, April 5th at 9:30am. The event will include a special Walk through Holy Week for the kids as well as a brunch and an Easter Egg Hunt. This event provides a non-threatening opportunity to invite friends and neighbors to learn more about why the Church celebrates Easter.

Save the Date: Men’s Overnight! The City Church Men’s Overnight is Friday, May 9th. It will be held at Chanco on the James (located about forty-five minutes south of Richmond). Stay tuned for more details!
