Announcements, 3.26.14

This Week's Sermon: Erik will preach on John 7:53-8:11 this week. We invite you to read ahead as a way to prepare yourself for this week’s sermon.

No Children's Worship on Sunday: As this is the fifth Sunday of the month, Children’s Worship will not take place during this week's service. We encourage parents to worship with their children and to see it as an opportunity to teach them about the service. (Nursery care will still be available for ages 0 through 3.)

Nursery Room Change: Due to increasing numbers in our nursery class for 2-3-year-olds, those children will now meet in room 207 (at least for the time being). Good news: there's a train table!

Allowing Disturbance (and the Chattanooga Trip): Liz Crim wrote a wonderful blog post for the City Church website about the importanceof  allowing your life to be disrupted by God–and how our upcoming mission trip to Chattanooga is one way you can let Him do that. Please take a moment to read it. And remember: applications for the Chattanooga trip are due by March 31st. Contact John Bourgeois ( for more info.

The Makers Series: MakeRVA will host an installment of its Makers Series at Third Presbyterian Church (600 Forest Avenue) on Friday, March 28th at 7pm. The event will focus on the theme of "Story." Featured speakers include City Church attendee Nate Clarke. For more information, visit (MakeRVA is a movement of artists and creative catalysts striving to fully integrate our art, faith, and humanity for the common good of RVA.)

Grief Observed: Death is something we will all experience, but it’s difficult to accept and process – sometimes especially as Christians. How can we best support each other, Biblically equip ourselves against the pitfalls of grief, and help the church better engage with grievers? Grief Observed provides the framework to start answering those questions. Our next meeting is this Sunday, March 30th at 9:30am. Please email Meg Haden,, to sign up and learn more.

Human Trafficking Forum: City Church will host an informational forum on human trafficking after our Sunday's service in room 303. City Church ministry partners The Grey Haven Project and Richmond Justice Initiative will discuss what they are doing in Richmond to advocate against human trafficking and to care for victims of human trafficking. Please join us in learning how City Church is partnering with these organizations. For more information contact Ben Morehead (

Easter Brunch and Egg Hunt: To mark our celebration of the Easter season with our kids and families, we will hold a special event open to all at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, on Saturday, April 5th at 9:30am. The event will include a special Walk through Holy Week for the kids as well as a brunch and an Easter Egg Hunt. This event provides a non-threatening opportunity to invite friends and neighbors to learn more about why the Church celebrates Easter. Here you'll find a PDF invitation that we hope you'll send out to friends and family, inviting them to join us!

Create Every Day Meet-Up: Several City Church members and attendees have committed to creating something every day over the course of Lent. All who participated are invited to come to Kim Nix's home (4419 Monument Avenue) on Saturday, April 5th at 7:30pm to discuss and celebrate their work. Contact Kim at for more information and to let her know if you're planning to come.

Friday Night Dinner: Our next Friday night dinner is on April 11th, and we want you to join us! This is a casual dinner open to all – members, visitors, neighbors, etc... – that provides a chance for us to get to know new people within our community. Hosts will provide the main dish, and each attendee (up to 10 per house) can bring a side of their choosing to share with the group. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP using this form no later than Tuesday, April 8th, and we will be in touch with details.

Mercy Fund on Sunday: We will take up a special mercy fund offering at Sunday’s service, as we always do on the last Sunday of the month. Whatever is given will be kept separate from our general budget and will be used to aid those in our congregation, and in our community, who have emergency needs. Please prayerfully consider what you might give.

Meals for City Church Families: We are currently providing meals for two City Church families: Jane and Mabel Marshall, and Hatch and Shannon Reppard. If you’re interested in caring for them in this way, visit Use the family’s last name as the log-in and password. Contact Valerie Catrow ( with questions.
