English Park Evangelists
Something exciting has begun to happen – I (Robbie) am no longer going to the park to witness alone. First, several weeks back my brother-in-law Vu asked to join me, and he has been a regular since. Then word must have spread through Vu, because two others from our English Bible study group have subsequently come out to the park multiple times as well. And over the past couple weeks there have been additional (short-term) foreign guests engage in park outreach as well. So on some days there have been at least 6 people seeking to engage people for Christ at English park! This has resulted in an augmented testimony to the gospel as well as precious mutual encouragement and concerted prayer. Praise the Lord!
Trung – I met one-on-one with Trung again last weekend. I believe he recognizes that following Jesus is the right thing to do. But he hasn't decided to do that yet because he is loathe to do anything which would upset his family, who are traditionally Buddhist and ancestor worshipers. He understands that submitting to Jesus as Lord would require him to forsake those sinful traditions, and he fears this would greatly upset his extended family, despite the fact that his father did not forbid him during a previous conversation. Please pray for Trung. I think he understands the gospel, but needs the power of God to grant the new birth and obedience by the Spirit which overcomes the fear of man and (like Moses!) treasures the reproach of Christ (Hebrews 11:24-27).
Oanh – One afternoon at the park I was witnessing to a group of students standing together under a pavilion seeking shelter from the rain. Then Oanh came up to our group mid- conversation. Joining in, Oanh explained that she had been reading the Bible and learning about Jesus for the last 6 months. She was full of humble, joyful faith and provided a bright testimony to God. I marveled at God's coordination, bringing Oanh to us at just the right moment. Perhaps in large part due to Oanh's testimony, 3-4 students in the gathered group accepted gospel booklets (Mark, Luke) right before we dispersed. God is amazing.
Alfie (Duy) overheard me talking about the Bible and inquired. He said he is currently trying to read the Old Testament in Hebrew. Yes, you read that correctly! The like-minded example of his polyglot Spanish teacher inspired him. He is not a Christian, but a self- described "theist" who likes learning about different religions. I told him the importance of putting ourselves under the authority of the Bible, to be corrected by it, rather than vice- versa. Alfie appeared to enjoy our conversation. He admitted that some things he reads in Genesis seem to have something "special" about them. Yes, indeed! I encouraged him to keep reading. We've met once more since and talked again about the Old Testament.
Matthew Evangelistic Bible Study
To date we've studied the first four chapters of Matthew, tackling around 10-15 verses or so per weekly meeting. Tonight I get to lead the discussion on the first section of the Sermon on the Mount! Two meetings ago we had a special party and instead of studying Matthew we presented a gospel summary as the highlight. Please pray for these seeds of the word to bear fruit which remains!
Daniel's New Role...
In his kindness the Lord has blessed our family and promoted Daniel to the role of: older brother! Yes, that means Minh Loan is pregnant, ~9-10 weeks! We had just begun to ask the Lord about additional children, and he has answered. We are deeply grateful for this new grace. As a result, we are re-thinking our housing decision for next year and asking God for wisdom on how to prepare for the newest member of our family. A joyous responsibility!
Triennial TEL staff conference
Lord willing we will join some fellow gospel workers for a week in Thailand, Nov 26 – Dec 3, 2013. We pray for an encouraging, edifying, and refreshing time for all, and that we would together minister unto the Lord. Minh Loan is feeling quite sick at this stage of the pregnancy – please pray for ample health so she can fully participate. Also, Daniel has been running a high fever off and on since the middle of last night. Thank you!
Thank you for praying for our family and for the interests of the Lord Jesus Christ in Vietnam! What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? -- Romans 8:31-32 (ESV)
