A quick update from Jennifer Disse, a City Church member preparing to head out into the mission field in Mundri, South Sudan... Hello, City Church friends! Thank you so much for your continued prayers and support of the ministry in Mundri, South Sudan. It is a blessing to partner with so many different people and share the wonderful ways God is working in the world’s newest nation! Recently, my teammates set up a weekend of teacher training, welcomed back Heidi, said goodbye to Bethany, and celebrated new babies in town! Keep my teammates and their Sudanese friends in your prayers.
Of course, God has been working mightily here in the states, as well. I just returned from a month of missionary training in Palmer Lake, Colorado. There, I lived with 45 adults and 25 children—all heading out into cross-cultural missions. The itinerary consisted of language learning and phonetics classes, culture-shock simulations, group theological discussions, and self-assessments (to name just a few activities). During this time, the gravity of my self-centeredness was exposed, and I learned how crucial it is to exit my frame of reference and humbly enter another person’s world. If I can’t compromise or show grace to my family in friends in Richmond, how will I be able to do that to my new friends of a completely different culture in South Sudan?
Above all, the highlight of my time in Colorado came when looking through God’s word. I had been praying that the Lord would give me more of a hunger for His word, and He was faithful! I spent one day simply dwelling on Matthew 11:28-30. The Holy Spirit convicted me of how frequently I look within myself to solve my problems. If I could only give up control and give my burdens to Jesus—what a weight would be lifted from my shoulders! I’ve been praying that the Holy Spirit will continue to reveal the futility of my own striving and the power of His love.
Currently, I am at 70% funded and trying to reach the field in May. Please pray that the Lord will raise up generous supporters to join my team. Also, pray that I will act with the boldness and discernment I need for this calling. Pray that the Lord will be with me in the goodbyes, giving me knowledge of how to do something that I typically try to avoid. Again, your prayers and support are appreciated more than you know! Do not hesitate to let me know how I can be praying for each of you, as well.
