Art for Advent 2017: The Image of God
"Portraits" by Jake Lyell

In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
(Isaiah 40:3)

Holy One and Resurrected Redeemer | Psalm 16 and Job 19:23-27

1 Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
2 I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
    I have no good apart from you.”

3 As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones,
    in whom is all my delight.

4 The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply;
    their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out
    or take their names on my lips.

5 The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;
    you hold my lot.
6 The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
    indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.

7 I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
    in the night also my heart instructs me.
8 I have set the Lord always before me;
    because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.

9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices;
    my flesh also dwells secure.
10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,
    or let your holy one see corruption.

11 You make known to me the path of life;
    in your presence there is fullness of joy;
    at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

“Oh that my words were written!
    Oh that they were inscribed in a book!
24 Oh that with an iron pen and lead
    they were engraved in the rock forever!
25 For I know that my Redeemer lives,
    and at the last he will stand upon the earth.
26 And after my skin has been thus destroyed,
    yet in my flesh I shall see God,
27 whom I shall see for myself,
    and my eyes shall behold, and not another.
    My heart faints within me!

As You Pray Today

Pray for the flourishing of Christ’s church everywhere / for the courage to go and tell the good news.

Let Us Pray

God of place and time, you chose the little town of Bethlehem to be the birthplace of David and of David’s greater Son, Jesus. Make us aware of your active purpose in our city and in our neighborhoods, so that we see them as places of promise in our time. Amen.

Blessing: Revelation  22:20-21

Come, Lord Jesus! The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.

We pray that this Advent season will be a blessed time for you and your household as we remember Christ's first coming into this world as a child, and look with expectation to the day of his return to make all things new.
