And he said to them, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” And he took a child and put him in the midst of them, and taking him in his arms, he said to them, “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.”
— Mark 9:35-37

When infants and children are baptized here at City Church, the pastor asks our members to stand and answer the following question:

Do you as a congregation undertake the responsibility in assisting the parents in the Christian nurture of this child?

One of the practical ways our congregation works to fulfill that vow is through our Children’s Ministry.

As a church we believe that children, just like adults, desperately need Jesus’s saving grace and love. What’s more, we view them as an important part of the church body and strive to let them (and their parents) know that we welcome them, love them, and delight in them—both during worship and within our community.

City Church’s Children and Families Ministry operates under the belief that parents, before any other organization (church included), are responsible for the spiritual nurturing of their children. We are committed to seeing families grow together in their love for Jesus, and want to walk beside you as you raise your children, providing the best help and resources we can.

Children’s Ministry at City Church is broken down into four sections. To learn more about the different branches of our Children’s Ministry, please click on the links below.

City Church provides nursery care for newborns through age 3 throughout each worship service.

Our nursery is divided into four groups, based on age and development:

  • Newborns to crawlers (crib room, located across the hall from the parlor)
  • Walkers and 1-year-olds (room 101)
  • 2-year-olds (room 102)
  • 3-year-olds (B-7, the basement playroom)

Caring for the children, helping them feel loved, keeping them safe, and introducing them to Jesus are our top priorities.

All nursery volunteers are required to fill out an application, undergo a criminal background check, and become well-versed in City Church’s Child Safety Policy. We also require each volunteer to participate in a three-hour training course during which we review basics of childcare (diaper changes, soothing techniques, age-appropriate activities and discipline techniques, etc.). We also ask parents to fill out a Child Information Card for each of their children so we are able to tailor our care to each child and have contact info for parents in the event it is needed.

Children age 4 through 2nd grade are invited to join us for Children’s Worship on the first, second, third, and fourth Sundays of the month. We do not have Children’s Worship on the fifth Sunday of the month and encourage parents to use that time to worship as family and to teach their children about the service.

Children’s Worship begins after the greeting time, just before the sermon, and lasts until the end of the service. Our Children’s Worship teachers are always present to escort the children to and from the Children’s Worship classroom (located on the third floor of the church).

We spend our time each week reading through a Bible story—putting specific emphasis on how it “points to” Jesus—and completing follow-up activities to reinforce the lesson taught in that story. The children are also given the opportunity to memorize scripture, as well as some liturgy that is used during the worship service at City Church.

We currently rotate through three different curricula: one is based on the Jesus Storybook Bible; another is the Gospel Story Curriculum; and the third is Telling God’s Story. All Children’s Worship lessons are focused on God’s love for us and the truth the Jesus loves us more than we could ever imagine.

Teams of three (one instructor and two helpers) lead our Children’s Worship class each week. All Children’s Worship volunteers are required to fill out an application, undergo a criminal background check, and become well versed in City Church’s Child Safety Policy. We also require volunteers to participate in a three-hour training course to be qualified to take part in our Children’s Ministry.

Children's Worship Graduates

Once children approach the end of 2nd grade, they take part in a six-week Children’s Worship Graduation Class. This class takes place after the greeting and before the sermon (just like Children’s Worship).

The purpose of this class is to prepare the children to spend all of worship with the congregation. In addition to learning about different aspects of the church (such as liturgy and music), they are also taught an easy way of taking notes that helps them listen to—and stay engaged with—the sermon.

Upon completion of the class, each Children’s Worship Graduate is paired up with a mentor within the congregation who helps ease the transition into participating in the entire worship service. Our mentors strive to be very intentional about their relationships with the Children’s Worship Graduates, making themselves available to welcome their mentees to church, sit together, or even serve together on a ministry team.

All of this works toward a simple goal: Just as Jesus loves, values, and welcomes all of his children into his presence, we want to help our children know they are loved, valued, and welcomed into the church body. We’re so glad they’re here.

Our next Children's Worship Graduates Class begins September 11th. Please contact Jim Pulizzi, Director of Children & Families, if you have questions about this next step in your child's life here at City Church.

City Kids aims to teach and embody the love of Christ to children in 3rd through 6th grade. It’s designed to support parents in the discipleship of their children and to provide a place where increasingly independent children can encounter Christ and be shaped by His grace.

City Kids is led by adult volunteers under the supervision of the church pastoral staff. All the leaders are members of City Church who have passed through eligibility screenings. We meet every other Sunday, right after church (5:45pm until about 7pm) in room 311 at Grace Covenant for dinner and a Bible lesson. Our 2016-2017 curriculum is What’s Up: Discovering Gospel, Jesus, and Who You Really Are.

City Kids kicks off September 18th! Check the Church Calendar for 2016-2017 meeting times.

Youth Group at City Church aims to teach and embody the love of Christ to 6th graders through 12th graders. It’s designed to support parents in the discipleship of their children and to provide a place where increasingly independent adolescents can encounter Christ and be shaped by His grace.

The Youth Ministry is led by adult volunteers under the supervision of the church pastoral staff. All the leaders are members of City Church who have passed through eligibility screenings. We meet for dinner and Bible study twice a month on Sunday evenings. Additionally, City Church partners with other local churches for regular social events, service opportunities, and discipleship weekends.
